I stumbled upon this really fascinating news article recently, which described an innovative new motorcycle helmet that hopes to revolutionize bike safety for the 21st century. As a motorcycle accident lawyer, I'm always intrigued to discover an article about motorcycle safety, but this one was especially interesting. Let's face it; for the past several decades, motorcycle helmets have remained pretty consistent in terms of safety and technology, and that's not necessarily a good thing.

Problems with helmet safety

Did you know that even a good helmet can break with enough impact? That seems to be the case with Duane Roth, the San Diego-based tech authority who recently suffered serious cranial damage after crashing his bicycle. According to reports, his helmet broke upon impact, and doctors had to remove a piece of his skull to remove pressure on his brain. Mind you, this was only a bicycle accident, not a motorcycle accident. But it illustrates how helmets aren't infallible.

New innovations in motorcycle helmet safety

Well, helmets may have a long way to go, but it appears that we're getting closer. Case in point: Reevu.

Reevu is the company that designed the world's first motorcycle helmet with built-in rear-view mirrors, and now they're taking things one step further by introducing a new “heads up display” system. This will allow riders to view GPS and performance data, engine diagnostics and much more. Call it the helmet of the future. And while this doesn't directly address the problem of head protection, it does give riders a better perspective, and may even help to reduce accidents.

Now, for the record, I am not receiving any payment or incentive to endorse Reevu, and my point really isn't to “endorse” their products at all. I simply mean to point out that helmet safety still has a great deal of evolving to do, and if there are innovators out there who feel up to the task, then I think that's something we can all get behind. Motorcycle accidents claim far too many lives every year, and while wearing a helmet is absolutely essential, it isn't always enough. Stay safe out there.
